Your dog needs you to be consistent in your expectations for his CAN DO! behaviors. But how do you know what’s fair to expect from your dog? Ask the dog himself to set the bar for appropriate performance.

This helps you be fair and only ask the dog what he can comfortably do. It doesn’t matter if another dog might be faster or slower, sloppier or more precise. Just ask your dog for his best.

Daisy the Wirehaired Fox Terrier can spin, sit, wave and lay down at lightning speed. That’s Daisy’s best. Her German Shepherd housemate Foster can do the same behaviors, but much more slowly. He’s older, bigger, has arthritis and less than ideal joints. But his best and Daisy’s best are still their best. That’s all that you can ask from anyone.

NOTE : Should a dog’s abilities change, you will need to reset the bar accordingly. Illness, age, injury, obesity, medication(s) and even weather and climate can alter how a dog performs.
